What is Psilocybin?
Psilocybin is a compound found in psilocybin mushrooms or more commonly known as “magic mushrooms” or “shrooms”. Psilocin, the resulting compound after psilocybin has been broken down by the liver is responsible for the psychedelic effects.
Effects of Magic Mushrooms
The effects of psychedelic mushrooms are subjective, as with many psychedelic drugs, and can differ considerably among individual users. Depending on the dosage, method of preparation, and personal metabolism, the mind-altering effects of psilocybin-containing mushrooms usually last from three to eight hours. The first 3-4 hours after ingestion are usually referred to as the ‘peak’ in which more realistic visuals and distortions are encountered by the user. Because of the ability of psilocybin to adjust time perception, the effects can appear to last much longer.

Health Benefits of Magic Mushrooms
A recent study by Imperial College London found that Psilocybin is highly effective in treating depression. 12 out of 12 subjects showed a significant reduction in depression symptoms, and 5 out of 12 were able to completely cure their depression three months later. In addition, magic mushrooms have been used to treat the end-of-life, as well as depression and anxiety disorders.
What all these conditions have in common, the researchers say, is that the brain’s circuit is “stuffed,” and that a single dose of magic mushrooms seems to reset the brain in a unique way, not just for one trip, but for months. Using brain scanner tools like the MRI, they have discovered that psilocybin switches off hyperactive parts of the brain, such as the ego – the center that worries us.
Although, scientists do not fully understand how Psilocybin can have such an effect on the mind, they suspect it may be due to the degree of neuroplasticity the brain must have. But the findings are backed by growing evidence that supports the benefits of Psilocybin in terms of mental health. In fact, several studies to date have shown that it can be used in combination with supportive therapy to treat depression in humans.
Microdosing is a good idea for people who want to expand their minds with magic mushrooms while they can still carry on with their everyday lives. Microdoses of psilocybin could have the potential to ease depression and anxiety and promote brain repair and cell growth.
Are Magic Mushrooms Safe?
According to the 2017 Global Drug Survey, magic mushrooms or shrooms are considered the safest “recreational” drug. People who used them are shown to have the most awareness and are the most prepared. Out of almost 10,000 individuals who ingested them, only 0.2% required emergency medical treatment. Additionally, psilocybin is difficult to abuse due to the short-term tolerance increases in users. The more frequent they are ingested in a short time frame, the weaker and weaker the effects are. A microdose can be used to enhance levels of energy, focus and creativity when integrated into the everyday life. Ways to Ingest
The Classic Chew and Swallow Method
Put the shrooms in your mouth and chew very thoroughly before you swallow. It is best to do it with an empty stomach or a light meal a couple hours before hand. This ingestion method will take around 45 minutes to start taking effect and will last between 4-8 hours.
Edibles are a great way of eating shrooms without tasting them. Shroom infused chocolate and gummies are an easy way to take bite size doses as well as full doses.
Blend your shrooms in a blender or magic bullet and steep in boiling water with a tea bag of your choice (or crushed ginger and honey). After steeping for 10 minutes, drink tea along with the bits of mushrooms. This method is great if you prefer not to taste the shrooms or want to be able to digest it easier. Keep in mind that ingesting it this way will have a much quicker come up (within 20 minutes) and will last about 3-5 hours with greater intensity.
Lemon Tek Method
Using the lemon tek method for your trip will be about 2-3x as strong as eating the shrooms normally. It also has a quick come up of less than 20 minutes. First, blend/grind up your shrooms and place in a cup with the juice from approximately 2 lemons (enough to fully submerge shrooms). After letting it sit for 20 minutes, drink the beverage and enjoy.
